It's Long Range shooting season again here at Colorado Cowboys! For me, shooting long range means accuracy over speed. The Marksman needs to be able to put the fundamentals together to make the shot at increased distances. This year we will have some variety in the monthly Long Range shoots. We'll shoot from 50yds to 500yds plus where slow aimed fire is necessary and we will try a few Long Range Action Shooting (LRAS) events that will involve a bit of movement, use of barricades(props), and having to change to sight settings. Quigley Training! I feel that, as with Main match events, a shooter should have a lot more hits than misses. It's gotta be fun, and these are heavy rifles to be lugging around to not be having a blast ringing steel way across a field. I will always try and facilitate anyone who needs to get data on their sights. Feel free to contact me about anything Long Range. These are SASS events and all SASS rules will apply as found in the SASS Shooter's Handbook, pages 16-18. SASS Long range is based off of NRA Black Powder Cartridge Rifle Rules. We will try and follow the BPCR Rules and Guidelines when not covered by the SASS handbook. For example; “Crossed Sticks: Crossed sticks constructed of two wooden legs, no greater than 1 inch by 2 inches in thickness and width or 1 1/2” in diameter, and bolted or tied so that the two legs are hinged and capable of pivoting. The end of the legs may be equipped with spikes no more than 3 inches in length and no wider than the edge of the crossed stick. They may be inserted into the ground by hand pressure only to aid in retention of an upright position. One layer of protective material may be suspended or inserted in the “V” of the crossed sticks to protect the rifle.” Being Cowboy Long Range shooting, dress code applies. Whiskey James

While the wind is blowin' and the weather is cold is a good time for planning this year's shooting season. Sure, I hope everyone will mark August 3rd, 4th & 5th for the Badger Mountain Range War. And here is the BMRW ENTRY FORM. But I would also like to urge every one of the Colorado Cowboys, regardless of your level of experience, to attend the Colorado State Championship hosted this year by our neighbors the Sand Creek Raiders, June 7th through 10th, aka The Rocky Mountain Regional Raid. Heck, the range at Byers is only about 2 hours from the Colorado Springs area, so you get a major match without having to drive out of state! For more info, click the "read more" button. |

MAY 5th: We will be holding a short Swap Meet before the May Match. Bring your outgrown clothes, gun-leather, used-ewes, what-have-you and sell or trade them off the back of your truck or Chevy Volt. MAY 6TH: SHOOTERS' CLINIC ~ Instruction for both new and experienced shooters on such subjects as transitions, speed pistol, rifle, & shotgun (both SxS and that other contraption, the Old '97), and intro to "gunfighter." MAY 12th: WORK PARTY. There is much that needs doing to ready the Range for the coming year. Mostly painting, so wear old clothes, but also some carpentry, too ~ like putting a roof over the breezeway between the Church and Madame Orr's. AUGUST 3rd, 4th, & 5th: BADGER MOUNTAIN RANGE WAR: The theme this year is "3:10 to Yuma" with stages from both the original version and the remake. |
